A Commission of Inquiry into Execution-Style Killings in Guyana is Coming

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Friday January 26, 2018 – Minister of State Joseph Harmon says a Commission of Inquiry is on the cards to investigate a series of execution-style killings that took place during Guyana’s worst crime era, 2000-2008.
In making the announcement, Harmon recalled that when President David Granger was Leader of the Opposition, he had taken a motion to the National Assembly calling on the government at that time to establish an inquiry into the killings, but nothing was done under the previous administration.
“Now, he is the Head of State and he is in a position to do something about it and I want to assure you that he will do something about it,” Harmon said today.
The Minister said Guyanese who lost relatives during the 2008 Lusignan and Bartica massacres – in which a total of 23 people were murdered – and other mysterious killings deserve closure.
“At some point in time you need to bring closure to some things and I believe that was what the President was saying – that we have to bring closure,” Harmon said, adding that the annual ceremony in remembrance of those brutally killed reemphasizes that need for closure.
Among the killings into which inquiries will be conducted is that of former Agriculture Minister Satyadeow Sawh who was assassinated in April 2006.
