Taiwan contributes to Development Programs in St. Lucia

(PRESS RELEASE) – A donation ceremony for “phase two project of the 2017 Constituency Development Programme(CDP)” was held at Prime Minister Office on 24th January 2018.

Hon. Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, H.E. Ambassador Douglas Shen of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Hon. Guy Joseph, Minister for Economic Development, Housing, Urban Renewal, Civil Aviation, attended the ceremony. Ambassador Shen, on behalf of the Taiwan Government, presented a funding of 4.7 million EC dollars (1.75 million US dollars)to sponsor this program.

In his remarks, Ambassador Shen noted that the global warming and climate change have caused natural disasters in Caribbean area in recent years, it is imperative to ensure the safety of Saint Lucian people and their property with an upgraded infrastructure system. That is why the government of Taiwan and Saint Lucia decided to work together on CDP program since the two countries resumed diplomatic relations in 2007. He also emphasize that the CDP program has completed over 2,000 projects and created more than 20,000 jobs to enhance the infrastructure of various communities all over the island. Taiwan will continue to work together with Saint Lucia government for making a better life for the people.

Prime Minister Allen Chastanet expressed his thankfulness to Ambassador Shen and Taiwan government for its generosity in supporting the CDP program, and its willingness to assist the economic development of Saint Lucia. He also highlighted that the CDP is an extremely meaningful program and has overall impacted the local people’s life.

Moving forward, his government will continue to work with Taiwan through a package of economic developing projects, to further enhance the environment of tourism industry and create more job opportunities for local people.
