Castries Lions Club donates to Kids-In-Sight Project

By Lions Club

The Kids-In-Sight programme is a collaboration among the Lions and Leos clubs of Saint, the Lions of West Virginia and the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association.

The programme which has been in existence from 2003 provides access to low income families to vision aid.   The team of doctors who are Lions use their annual vacation to make the visit.   During the visit the conduct eye examination on the many children who are captured through the vision programme of the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association.  In addition a number of corrective eye surgeries are undertaken at St Jude hospital and Victoria, and where required the children are fitted with glasses.   The team also takes time conduct training with the many teachers and community nurses who make the referrals.

The programme has grown tremendously and over the year and in addition to the children a number of adults have been benefitted.

The clinics are held in two parts.  The first part of the visit starts in the south at the St Jude Hospital and support is provided by the Micoud, Soufriere Piton and Vieux Lions.   The second clinic is held at the Blind Welfare Association and support is provided by the Gros Islet and Castries Lions.

Funding for the programme is obtained from a grant from Lions International for equipment and other technical support. The Lions clubs of Saint Lucia as the implementing lions provide matching funds.

This year the Castries Lions made a contribution of five thousand dollars to the Kids in Sight programme.  The funds donated were raised through our collaboration with the Events Company of Saint Lucia, where we provide assistance at their events in return for a contribution towards our community projects.

The Castries Lions Club expresses it thanks to the Events company of Saint Lucia and the man partners who through their support of our fund raising events have enable us to continue our service to the needy in our community.
