(GIS) – The Commonwealth Heads of Government summit in the United Kingdom is slated for April 2018.

In a brief address at the Remembrance Day Re-Union Ceremony at the Prime Minister’s Official Residence at Vigie, on Sunday, Nov. 12, Deputy British High Commissioner, Ambassador Craig Fulton, said the April summit will be an ambitious one as members look to renew the Commonwealth for the present and future generation.

“The UK will host Saint Lucia and many of the Commonwealth countries,” Ambassador Fulton, said. “Youth is very much at the center of the Commonwealth and how it will grow and deliver in the future and also a multi-lateral forum taking forward that important area.”

One of the four main themes for the upcoming summit is “A More Secure Future for All.”

Meanwhile, throughout this year, the UK Department for Communities and Local Governments have been partnering with the Big Ideas Community Interest Company, in support of a program of events and initiatives to raise awareness of the vital contribution of Caribbean men and women who served in the British West Indian Regiment. Similarly, Governor General and Patron of the Saint Lucia Brach of the Commonwealth Ex-Services Legion, HE Dame Pearlette Louisy, has invited the public to make suggestions on how to keep the Remembrance Day observance alive in Saint Lucia.

“Four hundred and fifty thousand men from the Caribbean made up the British West Indian Regiment, which was first formed in 1915. The recruits originally included men of Indian and Chinese descent, as well as local and indigenous populations from across the Caribbean including Saint Lucia. Sadly, the losses of war are still very much with us, but through remembering we also hopefully allow ourselves to learn from our mistakes, increase our wisdom, and to move toward a more secure future for all.”

Remembrance Day is observed annually on Nov. 11, as an occasion to honour the sacrifices made by the soldiers of World Wars I and II, and many other peace-keeping missions.
