'Multiple deaths' in Maryland shooting, female suspect held

By BBC

A suspect believed to be a woman has shot and killed at least three people in a gun attack at a warehouse complex in the US state of Maryland.

The shooting happened on Thursday morning at a pharmacy distribution centre in Perryman, near Baltimore.

Police confirmed "multiple fatalities" while law enforcement sources told CBS News the suspect in custody was female.

The source added that the motive was still unclear - but there were no indications it was terrorism related.

If it is confirmed that the shooter is female, it would be a rare mass shooting by a woman in the US where more than 95% of such attacks are carried out by men.

'Officers fired no shots'

The Maryland attack has also left "multiple wounded", the Harford County Sheriff's Office said, adding that the suspect is in custody in "critical condition".

he sheriff's office initially urged residents to avoid the area, which is about 40km (25 miles) north-east of Baltimore.

But it later tweeted that "we do not believe there is any further threat to the community".

FBI officers were deployed to the scene just minutes after first reports of the shooting at the Rite Aid centre emerged at 09:06 local time (13:06 GMT).

At a news conference later on Thursday, Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said it appeared that the suspect had a single handgun, and officers did not fire any shots at the scene.

US media reports say that the Maryland killer is a disgruntled employee, but this has not been confirmed by officials.

The identity of the shooter has not been publicly released.
