Venezuelans Voted for Democracy and Peace in Municipal Elections

By Prensa Latina

With significant turnout, Venezuelans elected Sunday 335 mayors and the governor of the State of Zulia in a show of open democracy and peace, in which the ruling United Socialist Party (USPV) won over 300 posts.

At a public rally at the capital's Bolivar Square to celebrate the victory of USPV's candidate Erika Farias as Caracas mayoress, President Nicolas Maduro said his political organization won the mayor's offices in the country's key cities like Maracaibo, Valencia, Maturin and others.

'Today, people's hope on the Homeland has been renewed. The revolution of hope has triumphed today', said the Head of State at the rally that went on after midnight.

'Now, let's move forward to the triumph of national union, to the triumph of renewed hope', Maduro stressed in his speech that was televised nationwide.

The National Electoral Council reported that 9,139,564 voters turned out to cast their ballots, equivalent to 47,32 percent of the electorate, in this municipal elections, the third electoral process this year in less than four months, reaffirming Venezuela's democracy.

The first was for the National Constituent Assembly on July 30, for State governors on October 15 and for mayors this Sunday, December 10.

They took place after violent riots spurred by the extreme right opposition in April, May and June that left over 100 dead and considerable material damage.

International observers assured the process on Sunday was transparent and fair. The head of the Council of Electoral Experts of Latin America, Nicanor Moscoso, said since the vote began they visited polling stations throughout the day and noticed the elections were taking place under complete normalcy.

The country's General Attorny Tarek William Saab pointed out that over 800 prosecutors were deployed to guarantee electoral legality and look into any complaint.

The first Vice President of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, described the day as an 'overwhelming triumph of the people who showed they want to live in peace.'

President Maduro called for getting ready for presidential elections in late 2018, a vote in which the people once again will come out victorious, he said.
