2020 Common Entrance Examination Results

The results of two thousand one hundred and eighty three (2183) candidates were processed for the 2020 Common Entrance Examination. Of these, one thousand and fifty–two (1052) were male and one thousand one hundred and thirty–one (1131) were female. Fifty–two (52) candidates were provided with accommodations including large print, reader, scribe, reader-scribe and attendant. Fifteen (15) candidates were absent. The Common Entrance Examination this year comprised only of the Multiple Choice components. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the Ministry of Education take a bold decision to eliminate the subjective components of the examination. By doing so, the amount of time candidates spent in the examination room was decrease. For this year’s examination, the composite scores ranged from 17.22% to 98.22%. The national mean was 64.26% representing an increase of 4.17% when compared to the 2019 national mean of 60.09%. One thousand one hundred and ninety– two (1192) or 55% of the candidates scored at or above the national mean, while nine hundred and ninety–one (991) or 45% scored below the mean. Two thousand one hundred and seventy-three (2173) candidates were assigned to twenty one secondary schools Table 1 reveals the range of scores of candidates assigned to each secondary school.

PERFORMANCE BY GENDER
Both males and females attained over 50% mean performances in all the three areas namely English Language, Mathematics and General Paper.

SUBJECT PERFORMANCE
The national mean performance in each subject area is shown in Table 3. When compared to the three previous years 2017 to 2019, there was an increase in performance in all the three components tested. English Language recorded the highest performance of 66.17%. The descriptive statistics for each subject topic are provided in Table 4. In General Paper, Mathematics and English Language all components recorded means of over 50% except for English Language – Spelling.
Overall, the highest mean of 73.90% was recorded in English Language-Word Usage whilst the lowest mean of 49.10% was recorded in English Language- Spelling. TABLE 42020 Common Entrance Examination Results Performance of candidates in each subject topic
TOP PERFORMERS
The top performers for the 2020 Common Entrance Examination are disclosed in Table 5. These eleven (11) candidates who attained scores of 95.00% and above came from eight (8) primary schools on the island. DISTRICTS’ PERFORMANCE
The performance of candidates at the district level is presented in Table 6. Their means ranged from 58.51% to 68.85%. Districts one, two, six and seven attained a mean greater than the national mean of 64.26%. TABLE 62020 Common Entrance Examination Results Performance of districts
