April is National Youth Month

By GIS

National Youth Month, observed in the month of April, will feature events that spotlight the achievements of Saint Lucian youth.

This year a youth policy will be unveiled for the first time. Minister for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Kenson Casimir, said the policy is expected to shape the development of the nation’s youth.

“The youth policy is an important document that will guide how we develop our young people over the next couple years. The youth policy will be launched this month. In addition, we are also looking into a sports policy for Saint Lucia that will guide the development of our sporting prowess. There will also be the launch of Skill 758, an app geared toward having a listing of all the skills on island in one location.”
Skill 758 will expose the nation’s youth to potential employers. There are also plans to develop alternative sports as part of a sports tourism plan.

“For the Independence Drag Wars, for example, there were more than 500 individuals from the diaspora who came to Saint Lucia to enjoy drag racing. When we planned alternative sports we also considered games like chess and draughts that could attract more people when compared with just traditional sports, and we have noted successes,” the minister said.

“The establishment of a 50-meter and 25-meter pool at the Aquatic Centre is also going to be a huge sports tourism initiative simply because the colder nations will have Saint Lucia as an alternative to enjoy warm weather, and a sporting facility in the tropics.”

Activities for National Youth Month will take place at various locations around the island.
