Breaking Down Today's Top 10 Android Apps

The Android app market continues to thrive. According to mobile market intelligence firm Priori Data, the top 10 Android apps combined accounted for more than 19 million downloads last month, led by a game called Kick the Buddy with 2.96 million downloads in June.

The rest of the US top 10 consists of two other games (Love Balls and Helix Jump), e-commerce app Wish, a news app, two music apps, and of course, some social and messaging apps including Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and Snapchat. But when comparing these figures with June's top Android apps globally, some interesting trends emerge.

Of the more than 306 million downloads of the top 10 global Androidapps in June, half of the apps are Facebook-owned products. The global Android app downloads show how far-reaching Facebook's apps have become worldwide, with Facebook's five apps in the global top 10 combining for more than 172 million downloads in June.

WhatsApp led the list with 55.78 million downloads, followed by Messenger at 44.06 million and Instagram in fifth place at 27.04 million. Unlike the US Android app list, the global list also includes both Facebook and Facebook Lite, the pared-down version of the Facebook app made for developing countries with weaker connectivity. Four of the other apps (Kick the Buddy, Helix Jump, musical.ly, and Love Balls) also appeared on the US list.

Facebook's active user numbers across its products dwarf other social and messaging apps, and globally the company is even more dominant than it is in the US when it comes to Android users.
