Calderon does well at Panam Youth Under-19 and World Table

Saint Lucian table tennis player, De Andre Calderon, in his first outing at the Panam Youth Under-19 Table Tennis Championships held in Charleston, West Virginia, USA, from 23-30 July, 2023, reached the quarter-finals of the Under-19 Boys Singles. On the way to the quarterfinals, the Caribbean Under-19 Silver Medallist beat Nicolas Callabra of Argentina 11-8, 11-6, 11-3; Alex Henry of Barbados 11-3, 11-5, 11-1; Leonardo Perez of Mexico 8-11, 11-1, 11-1, 11-4, 11-5 and Jordan Grewal of Canada in a tough battle that lasted all 7 games - 11-5, 6-11,9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 6-11, 11-5. In the quarterfinals, he went down to Sid Naresh of the USA 2-11, 5-11, 4-11,6-11. Following the Panam Youth U-19 Table Tennis Championships, Calderon competed in the World Table Tennis Youth Under-19 Contender at the same venue. In that competition, his first battle was with the World number 17 Pais Jain of India, losing in a tight encounter 2-3. The match scores were 7-11, 11-6, 13-11, 7-11, 6-11. He, however, qualified to the next round by beating Gaston Tresca of Argentina 11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6 In the round of 32, Calderon beat Ryan Perez of Puerto Rico 11-6, 11-6, 11-3. However, in the round of 16, De Andre lost to the eventual champion of the
competition, Leonardo Iizuka of Brazil, in a nail-biting encounter: 18-20, 7-11, 9-11. Calderon comes home to prepare for his next assignment in Trinidad where he will compete in the ICWI Table Tennis Champions League for his Barbados Club team. The competition is scheduled for the 23-27 August, 2023.
