CANTA meeting ends

Saint Lucia Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (SLCTVET) hosted a successful 34th Meeting of Caribbean Association of National Training Agencies (CANTA) at the Bay Gardens Hotel.
The meeting which took place on March 5 and 6, saw a new executive being elected to manage the affairs of the CANTA for the period 2024-2026. For the first time in the history of the organization, the Chairmanship of the CANTA will reside with a member state of the OECS in that of Dr. Kertney Thompson of St. Kitts and Nevis. Mr. Thompson is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the St. Kitts and Nevis TVET Council.
Dr. Patrice Parris -Searles, Chief Executive Officer of Trinidad & Tobago’s National Training Agency (NTA-TT) was elected as Vice Chair. Dr. Taneisha Ingleton Managing Director of Heart Trust Jamaica was also elected to the executive and will have the responsibilities for chairing the affairs of CANTA’s finance committee. Also, elected to the executive was, Mr. Allan Perry Thomas, Executive Director of the Saint Lucia TVET Council and Mr. Endall Johnson, Director of National Qualification Department (NQD) of Saint Vincent. Mr. Thomas and Mr. Johnson will be assuming the responsibilities for chairing the Standard Committee and Quality Assurance Committees of CANTA.
The meeting also voted unanimously to accept Haiti’s application for full membership into CANTA. Haiti will join Suriname as the other non-English speaking country of the organization.
The 14-member organization is endorsed as the implementation arm of the CARICOM Regional Coordinating Mechanism for TVET whose goals is to promote the development of a competitive regional workforce and to facilitate free movement of certified skilled workers within the CSME. Members have ended the two-day meeting armed with information on upcoming projects designed to further advance TVET in the region. The agenda for 2024 will include a number submissions to CARICOM’s Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) in addition a number of capacity building initiatives intended to benefit NTA in the respective territories.
