CCJ Academy for Law to host regional town hall meeting, today

On Thursday, November 14 at 6 p.m. (EST), the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) Academy for Law will host a regional Town Hall meeting to discuss the Needham’s Point Declaration on criminal justice reform. This event will take place at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Faculty of Law, Lecture Room 2. The event will be live streamed via UWITV and is open and free to the public to attend in person.
Key topics to be discussed include:
- The Rights of the Accused: Ensuring that individuals accused of crimes are treated fairly including legal representation, the presumption of innocence, and the right to a fair trial.
- The Rights of Victims/Survivors: Recognising and upholding the rights of victims and survivors is crucial to providing support and resources to victims, ensuring their voices are heard throughout the judicial process.
- The Police and Prosecution: The roles and responsibilities of police and prosecutors in modernising the criminal justice system.
The event will be moderated by Ms Dionne Miller-Jackson. Speakers will several key figures in the criminal justice system from throughout the region including the Honourable Delroy Chuck, KC, MP, Minister of Justice, Jamaica; Mr Richard Stewart, OD, Deputy Commissioner of Police; Mr Peter Champagnie, KC; and Ms Mickel Jackson from Jamaicans for Justice.
