CHTA mourns passing of St. Lucian hotelier Nick Troubetzkoy

By CHTA

The Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association mourns the passing of noted Saint Lucian hotelier, developer and visionary The Honourable Nick Troubetzkoy, SLC, SLMH, during a recent visit to London. Nick’s endearing legacy lives within the spirit of the people of Soufriere and his adopted country and is woven with the incredible natural beauty of Saint Lucia, which inspired the iconic Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain Resorts, which he etched into the Saint Lucian landscape.

Commenting on Nick’s passing, fellow Saint Lucian hotelier and President of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) Sanovnik Destang stated, “He was an industry giant who will be missed. He left a legacy on tourism in Saint Lucia and in the Caribbean—not only by dreaming big and creating a world-class product that stretched the boundaries of what we imagined possible but also his impact on the community and on championing sustainable tourism development.”

Among the many accolades celebrating his contributions to tourism and the community, Nick, and his wife Karolin, who was past President of CHTA, were the 2023 recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Caribbean Hotel & Resort Investment Summit (CHRIS) for their significant contributions to the hospitality industry over their lifetime, exemplified through their actions, deeds, and notable accomplishments.

The Government of Saint Lucia recognized his contributions to sustainability and community, recently bestowing upon him Saint Lucia’s highest honors, the Saint Lucia Cross (SLC) and the Saint Lucia Medal of Honour (SLMH). His decades of dedication to the people and environment of Soufrière exemplify his profound respect for the island he called home.

Nick’s remarkable journey, beginning in Western Canada, where he grew up and was schooled as an architect by several of the world’s leading professionals, led him to Saint Lucia in the 1970s where he worked on designing some of the islands early resorts and immediately fell in love with the island and its people.

The influence that Nick has had at the local and national levels as well as throughout the Caribbean is pervasive and a tribute to his devotion to doing the right thing for humanity, the environment, and the hospitality industry in general. That passion lives on every day and runs deep throughout their resorts, adjoining farm and the nearby Soufrière community.

Recently, when asked what he was most proud of professionally, Nick stated, “I am most proud of celebrating all things local, supporting the local St. Lucian communities and building in harmony with nature… These were always at the forefront of my mind when I was designing and building both Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain. It was important that our mantra throughout was local, local, local.”

On behalf of the leadership, members and partners of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association, CHTA extends to Nick’s wife Karolin, the Troubetzkoy family and their extended family of over 500 professionals, many who have worked with Nick since his early days, our deepest condolences. Nick will continue to live on in those he has touched and the legacy he has left.
