Concerns Rise Over Missing Firearm at Bordelais Correctional Facility
By Josiah G.A Bicette SNN
The recent disappearance of a firearm at the Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF) has sparked heightened concerns among officials, prompting an urgent investigation. Dr. Virginia Albert Poyotte, the Minister for Home Affairs, has confirmed that efforts are underway to locate the missing weapon and ensure that it is not within the confines of the correctional facility.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Dr. Poyotte stated, "At the Correctional Facility, they are taking measures now to ensure that it is not on the premises."
The incident came to light last week when it was reported that a senior officer at the BCF had misplaced their firearm. Verne Garde, the Director of Corrections, expressed deep concern over the matter and reassured the public that both the BCF and local police are actively engaged in investigating the circumstances surrounding the missing firearm.
Director Garde suggested that the missing firearm is likely located outside the facility or beyond the administrative area of the BCF. Notably, senior officers at the institution are traditionally not allowed to carry firearms within the facility, raising questions about potential breaches in security protocols leading to the weapon's disappearance.
In response to security concerns, the BCF recently conducted a comprehensive search operation named 'Mission Clean Sweep.' The operation aimed to locate and remove any contraband items within the facility. Director Garde expressed confidence in the effectiveness of these security measures, suggesting that the missing firearm might have been taken from the premises.
The ongoing investigation underscores the significance of maintaining stringent security protocols within correctional facilities. The outcome of the inquiry will be crucial in addressing any potential lapses and ensuring the safety and security of both staff and inmates at the Bordelais Correctional Facility. Authorities are committed to providing updates as the investigation progresses.
