We knew the UK variant (B.1.1.7 known as "British" variant), the consequences of which panicked the health authorities in France and in Europe. More recently, the alerts concerned the SA variants (B.1.351 called "South African" lineage) and BR-P1 (B.1.1.28 called "Brazilian" lineage). Currently, it is the so-called "Indian" or "delta" B.1.617 variant which is of concern to specialists.

It was first isolated in October 2020 near Nagpur (Maharashtra state including Bombay).

The most dangerous of variants

This "Indian" variant has a reputation for spreading faster than the others . But experts say the approved Covid-19 vaccines, used in the United States, Europe and other countries, are effective enough to contain the spread of the "delta".

For his part, Professor Cabié, of the University Hospital of Martinique fears a fourth wave after the summer holidays, especially as "attendance at vaccination centers has decreased" , observes the specialist in infectious and tropical diseases.

In this context, it is strongly recommended by the French authorities to "not travel to India" , except for compelling reasons.

Measures in force in the territory

The Indian authorities are implementing restrictive measures at the local level (curfews, confinement, restriction of the movement of people, closure of businesses and schools, etc.). Provisions may come into effect with little notice. In Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore and Calcutta, as well as in several medium-sized metropolises, access to hospital care is very limited.

To date, containment is maintained in the most affected areas, marked as containment zones. Federal states may impose stricter restrictions than those prescribed at the federal level, particularly with regard to the movement of foreigners.

Entering and leaving the territory

International commercial air links are suspended. However, a temporary arrangement allows service to Delhi, Bombay and Bangalore from Paris by Air France.

The categories of passengers authorized to travel are specified on the airline's website, as well as the procedure to follow to report their arrival using forms to be completed online.
