Covid-19 in Martinique: more than 3,600 cases and 24 deaths

Between Monday 2 and Saturday 7 August 2021, the number of new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Martinique stands at 3,684 (or 26,747 since March 4, 2020). 24 people have died during the past 6 days (a total of 167 deaths since the start of the pandemic) .

The epidemiological situation of the island therefore remains as worrying as ever in view of these figures updated daily by the Regional Health Agency, the prefecture and Public Health France.

Until Saturday, August 7, 2021, there were 253 hospitalizations, including 34 people in intensive care. None of the latter is vaccinated, notes the ARS.

Incidence rate: 1,166  (i.e. the number of cases over 7 days per 100,000 inhabitants)

Positivity rate: 19.4  (ie the proportion of positive tests on all analyzes).

Martinique, reconfined since July 30, 2021, is hit hard by the 4th wave of coronavirus and the hospital system is under pressure. Patients are transferred to hospitals in France.

Faced with the influx of new patients presenting acute signs of Covid, the CHUM has reinstalled tents at the entrance to the emergency rooms of the Pierre Zobda Quitman hospital in Fort-de-France,  "in order to streamline patient care as soon as they arrive " .

Prime Minister Jean Castex announced the doubling of the number of resuscitation beds currently deployed by the Army Health Service (SSA) 

The Delta variant progresses in Martinique 

" The Delta variant, raises fears of a wider community distribution" , indicate health officials in Martinique. This could accelerate the tightening of restrictive measures in Martinique. 

The Delta variant represented 10% of the contaminations, then 20% and now 40%. " It replaces the Alpha virus. It is even more contagious than the previous one. We risk having, after the start of a dazzling epidemic, a second phase which will be just as dazzling",  warns Jérôme Viguier, director of Ars Martinique. The Delta variant is already the majority in Guadeloupe, 200 kilometers from Martinique.

Containment like the first time?

Given a health situation which continues to deteriorate in Martinique, the prefect may have to tighten the current confinement. After usual consultation with the economic and political world, he could apply a class 1 confinement. That is to say that everything would be closed except for food stores as during the 1st confinement in 2020.

The three previous containment measures had reduced the contamination rate by 75% (March to May 2020, 8 weeks), (October to December 2020, 6 weeks) and April to May 2021, 3 weeks. The 4th containment began on July 31, 2021 for 3 weeks with a review of the situation in mid-August.

Vaccination 

As of August 3, 2021, 56,580 people have received two injections and 79,419 have received only one . This figure is far too low according to scientists and doctors, originally from Guadeloupe, Guyana, Martinique and Reunion and / or invested in these territories.

They call on their compatriots and all those who live there to be vaccinated "as soon as possible" against Covid,  "given the health disaster in which we are" .

Enforce restriction measures

At the same time, 200 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed on all the routes of Martinique "day and night"  to enforce the rules of movement.
