Creative Arts students encouraged to take advantage of opportunities for higher learning

Students involved in the Creative Arts in Saint Lucia are being encouraged to take advantage of opportunities for higher learning in the region.
Saint Lucian poet and playwright, Dr. Travis Weekes, who is currently a lecturer at the University of the West Indies St. Augustine campus, has been shedding light on the programs offered at the Department and how students can avail themselves of these opportunities.
Speaking to TV 30, a production of the Government Information Service on Monday, Dr. Weekes expounded on the courses offered.
“The Department of Creative and Festival Arts comprises many units: music, visual and creative arts, dance and theatre. We offer degree programs as well as certificate programs, so students interested in theatre could take a certificate course in Technical Theatre, for example. After two semesters, they would have received training in lighting, sound, costuming, and stage management,” he explained.
Students who complete the certificate can enter the degree program automatically. Dr. Weekes said training in the Arts offer many benefits to society. Now that music festivals are growing in popularity in Saint Lucia and the wider region, this type of training paves the way for more professionally executed productions.
“While the Government is putting so many resources into the festivals, it’s crucial that they also realize that they have to budget to send young people to get the training that will make the festivals better organized.”
