A RECENT AWARDS CEREMONY ENCOURAGED EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMICS, SPORT.

The Dennery Primary School recently honoured students who excel in academics and sport at an Awards Ceremony held as part of Nobel Laureate Day observations.

The ceremony celebrated students’ accomplishments and encouraged students to strive for excellence in academic, sports and extra-curricular endeavours, using the island’s two Nobel Laureates as examples of achievement.

Present at the ceremony was Soca Artist, Youth Activist and Founding Member of RISE Saint Lucia Inc., Jonathan “Ninja Dan” St. Rose, who provided entertainment and advised students on conflict resolution strategies.

Principal of the Dennery Primary School, Mrs. Sherol Francis, said the awardees have made their school and parents proud, thus it is only fitting to celebrate their achievements.

“We have gathered here not just to celebrate the achievements of the students but to give due regard to our values and morals which these awards exemplify like discipline, perseverance, resilience through adversity, and epitomizing a zeal for learning.”

Students who excelled received merit badges and certificates, while the top achiever received a laptop computer provided by Sasha King, a former student, who lives and works overseas.

Ms. King expressed delight at the opportunity to give back to her community and the school which she once attended. She too encouraged the students to always strive for excellence.

“You can make it, there are no ifs or buts about it. Reach for the stars and whatever you put your mind to, you can achieve it.”

Education Officer for District Five, Jean Jeriffe, told students to work hard and be mindful of getting easily distracted.

“You will not be successful overnight or wake up next day and have a degree or a big house or a car. You must be willing to put in the extra work, to study, to listen to your teachers, to produce the work that is expected of you, if you are to excel in life,” he said.

The school also took the opportunity at the ceremony to elect litter wardens. These carefully selected students will help police indiscriminate littering on the school compound, to foster a clean and healthy school environment.
