EQuIP lays foundation for education system of the future
THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES ENSURE A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO EDUCATION REFORM AND DEVELOPMENT.
The Education Quality Improvement Project (EQuIP), is laying a foundation for the education system of the future.
EQuIP is a Caribbean Development Bank (CDB)-funded programme within the Ministry of Education, launched in 2018, after many consultations and refinements. The project comprises many different components.
One of those is its special needs education focus which recently graduated 75 teachers from a one-year certificate course in Special Needs Education. There are other training programmes with one teacher pursuing a degree programme in speech and language therapy. The EQuIP also made available assistive devices, computers, and laptops to four special education centres around the island.
Another key mandate of EQuIP was the rehabilitation of three primary schools – the La Guerre Primary School, the Vide Bouteille Primary School, and the Gordon Walcott Memorial Methodist School. These schools now have brand new modern facilities and are climate resilient.
The EQuIP is also piloting the formation of parent-teacher-community associations at Piaye and Micoud Secondary Schools, the Lady Gordon Opportunity Centre, and the Soufriere Primary School. The objective is to get the community more involved in the education of students.
Another of the project’s objectives is policy formulation. The EQuIP is undertaking a review of the Education Act to ensure it addresses the interests of all students.
The EQuIP is funded by the Caribbean Development Bank and the Government of Saint Lucia.
