Glass-Smashing Incident Prompts Service Reduction at DIPT

By Josiah G.A Bicette/SNN

A disruptive incident at the Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Transport (DIPT) on Wednesday has led to an investigation by the police and prompted changes in service provision at the Transport Division.

According to reports, an angry customer caused significant damage by smashing his fist through a glass window during a confrontation at the DIPT offices. The incident has left staff traumatized and raised concerns about the safety of both employees and customers.

DIPT Permanent Secretary Lenita Joseph provided details about the altercation, explaining that the customer arrived to process a vehicle change of ownership. However, discrepancies between the information on the documents presented and the DIPT's licensing and registration database led to a disagreement.

"The customer became insistent that the licensing clerk effect the change according to the documents presented, eventually becoming violent," Joseph disclosed.

In response to the incident, the Transport Division announced a reduction in its services scheduled for March 21 and 22, 2024. This decision aims to ensure the safety of staff and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Joseph emphasized the importance of presenting accurate documents for transactions and urged the public to refrain from using force to manipulate the database. She stressed that such actions are not beneficial to anyone and could lead to further disruptions and inconveniences.

Furthermore, Joseph encouraged individuals to utilize the online platform provided by the DIPT as an alternative to in-person transactions, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and adherence to established procedures to facilitate smoother operations.

The DIPT remains committed to providing essential services while prioritizing the safety and well-being of its staff and customers. Investigations into the glass-smashing incident are ongoing as authorities work to address the situation appropriately.
