Implementation of the National Minimum Wage

By Department of Labour.

The Department of Labour is pleased to announce that effective October 1, 2024, the long-anticipated national minimum wage has officially come into effect. As per the new regulations, the minimum wage is set at $6.52 per hour, or $1131.00 monthly.

This milestone marks a significant step towards ensuring fairness and equity in the workplace, providing a guaranteed baseline income for all categories of workers across the nation. The Department of Labour urges all employers to comply with this new minimum wage standard and reminds businesses that this wage is to be paid in addition to any allowances, gratuity, and overtime compensation.

We also take this opportunity to encourage workers to honour the principle of “a fair day's work for a fair day's pay.” This mutual respect between employers and employees is key to maintaining productivity, job satisfaction, and the economic growth of the nation.

The Department of Labour remains committed to supporting both employers and employees in ensuring adherence to the new wage standards. Inspections and enforcement measures will be in place to guarantee compliance with the law, and we encourage anyone with concerns or questions regarding the minimum wage to reach out to the Department of Labour for guidance.

This is a significant stride towards social justice and a better quality of life for workers across St. Lucia. The Department of Labour will continue to advocate for fair wages and work conditions, ensuring that both employers and employees benefit from a thriving and equitable society.
