Improvements planned for OKH Accident and Emergency Department

THE OWEN KING EU HOSPITAL HAS BEEN WORKING ON CREATIVE WAYS TO LESSEN WAITING TIMES IN THE AED.

On Jan. 17, Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Heights Medical Complex, Dr. Dexter James, announced that serious changes in operations would be taking place at the centre.

Following a 2022 Year-In-Review, Dr. James highlighted the challenges faced by the medical complex, and shortcomings documented in patient feedback.

At the top of the list was waiting times in the Accident and Emergency Department (AED) and Outpatient Clinic at the Owen King EU Hospital, for patients triaged as requiring non-urgent care and one or more diagnostic investigations. These patients, he highlighted, spend three or more hours in the emergency department because resources must be deployed primarily to manage more urgent and life-threatening conditions. Dr. James said that while long waiting times for such care is not unusual in healthcare worldwide, the MHMC management team has been working on creative ways to alleviate the issue.

The CEO also outlined MHMC’s programme for the year which was developed around the theme “People First” with an aim at improving service quality. Some of these plans include a reduction in wait times for non-urgent care at AED, improvement in interpersonal communications with patients, scheduled family meetings, psychosocial support for patients and the creation of a one-stop-shop for admissions and billings.
