Ireland - lightning bolt leaves 'nine cows dead in field' after torrential storm

By Mirror UK

MIRROR UK - A freak lightning bolt has reportedly killed nine cattle after striking a farm in Ireland.

A passing driver saw the animals lying lifeless in a field with their "legs in the air", Irish Examiner reports.

The alarming incident happened after fierce storms in Dunlicky, County Clare, on the west coast of Ireland.

It comes after Met Éireann, the Irish weather service, issued alerts for most of the country, warning of thunderstorms, hail and flooding.

It is thought the cows were electrocuted in one of multiple lightning strikes which hit the area during the early afternoon.

One passer-by reported seeing the animals as they drove along the scenic Dunlicky Road towards Kilkee.

"There was a lot of thunderstorm activity in the area at the time and the sky blackened all of a sudden. The rain was pouring down really heavy for about 20 minutes," they told the Irish Examiner.

The torrential storms also forced a number of people who had been fishing nearby to run for cover in their cars.

One local said: "Just after we passed Dunlicky Castle we saw the cows in the field.

"There were a few cars and men in there as well. I think it was nine milking cows we counted."

It is not the first time that cows have been struck by lightning in recent years in Ireland.
