Japan-CARICOM Exchange Programme strengthens diplomatic relations
By Kia Williams
Junior diplomats from 14 CARICOM member states were invited to Japan to commemorate the 30th anniversary of “JUNTOS!”, the Japan-CARICOM Exchange Programme for Young Diplomats. The visit took place from March 21- 29.
The purpose of the visit was for CARICOM junior diplomats to learn about Japan’s culture, its development initiatives for combating natural disasters, climate change, and marine life preservation; and to further strengthen diplomatic relations between Japan and each respective CARICOM member state.
During the period, participants engaged in cultural experiences with students from Yoron Island, via one-on-one training sessions on how to play the Sanshin, a three string Japanese musical instrument; and how to dance the Eisa, a folk dance where persons sing, chant, and drum in circles.
Junior Diplomats also participated in informative observation sessions of garbage collection and disposal methods used on Yoron Island, and visited Saga University in Kumejima Island to acquire knowledge on ways to convert natural resources into renewable energy, preserve marine life, and on farming techniques to enhance fish and shrimp production.
Saint Lucia looks forward to strengthening its existing diplomatic relations through continued collaboration with exchange programs like JUNTOS, and through bilateral and multilateral agreements for the mutual development of our people.
