All eyes have been turned since Friday December 4 towards Mount Pelée. The increase in seismicity of superficial volcanic origin (up to 4-5 km below the summit) observed since April 2019, is therefore clearly above the base level. No eruption is expected in the short term

The OVSM-IPGP recommends the passage in level of yellow volcanic vigilance of Mount Pelée. This recommendation of ...

No risk, no alert, no concern for the population  " affirms the mayor of Saint-Pierre, Christian Rapha, following the change to yellow of the level of vigilance of Mount Pelée. The elected official affirms that there is no risk of a nearby eruption, specifying that Soufrière in Guadeloupe has been classified in yellow since 1999.

The increase in vigilance is due to an increase in the various monitoring sensors on the volcano. Small earthquakes have been taking place every day, for some time they have been more numerous, gas surges are also more frequent. So the baseline is up, which has forced scientists to turn yellow. An identical phenomenon took place in 2000.

Drones, seismic antennas ...

This increase in the level of vigilance will give scientists new means of observation: drones, seismic antenna, etc.

The mayor of Saint-Pierre deplores the way in which the communication was made and its direct consequences in the population.

"The new director of the Observatory has arrived from Réunion. He is used to monitoring the Piton de la Fournaise, which is very active and often erupts. He has surely confused the two situations" adds the mayor of the town.

A memory problem for Martinicans

Pascal Saffache, professor of geography at the University of the Antilles, on Martinique 1st radio, Saturday, December 5, 2020 at 7 a.m., recalled that the authorities have scènaris ready in the event of an alert.

He regrets the lack of memory of the Martinican population, affirming that there is a culture of seismic risk. He believes that many people are discovering or rediscovering with this yellow alert that Martinique is a volcanic island, formed thanks to several eruptions of the mountain peeled. He deplores the fact that many Martinicans do not have a survival kit at their home.

The professor recalls that Mount Pelée erupted in 1902 and in 1929.
In the event of another disaster, the seven municipalities surrounding the volcano would be impacted by the eruption but the fiery clouds could reach Case-Pilote and Bellefontaine. The rest of the island would only be concerned with unpleasant odors.

An organized information meeting

To answer all questions, a public meeting will take place from 2:30 p.m. on the market square in Saint-Pierre in the presence of the sub-prefect and scientists.

A necessary meeting for the population who are worried about this increase in the level of vigilance. Indeed some think that after the Covid, the year 2020 could reserve a new volcanic eruption of Mount Pelée.
