Minister of Education Supports Initiative to assist Young St. Lucian Writers

By SLUDTERA

PRESS RELEASE -  SLUDTERA would like to inform its readers and followers
that the Minister for Education, Hon. Dr. Gale Rigobert, is in support of an initiative to assist young St. Lucian writers. The initiative is called the St. Lucia's Queen's Commonwealth Essay Writers Fund, and it is implemented by SLUDTERA.
The Minister for Education, Innovation, Gender Relations and Sustainable Development, posted the message on her public figure page on December 1st 2020 asking persons to click on the link, follow the progress of the writers and find out how they can be supported.

The fund was instituted by organization founder and president Michelle N. Samuel who is also the Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition promoter in St. Lucia as well as a Junior Judge in the annual competition. Michelle once received a royal invitation from the Queen to attend the essay competition award ceremony at Buckingham Palace in 2018.
"The idea for the fund came about after last year's recognition ceremony was held. We charged a ticket fee and all the monies collected from the ticket fee of that event was shared equally among the winners. It was a very small collection, but it did provide the cash award which was absent from the tokens being awarded to the young writers at the time. A donation option was created so that persons could contribute without restriction towards the development of these young writers. The money can go towards their secondary or tertiary level tuition, or it can go towards the cost of the
publication of their works, if that is what the writers choose to do." Michelle stated.
Persons can donate amounts of XCD$50, 55, 100, 150, 200 or more.

About the Annual Recognition Ceremony.
In January each year which commenced in 2019, the awardees of the annual Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition are recognized for their written accomplishments. Youth in St.Lucia who emerge as National Winners of Gold, Silver and Bronze awardees are provided a platform through which their entries can be heard and publicly recognized.
The awardees also receive tokens and prizes from various partners and supporters. SLUDTERA accomplishes this by working in collaboration with businesses, units of government, educational institutions, labor and community-based organizations.
The 3rd annual award ceremony for the 2020 young writers, will take place on January 20th 2021 from 10 am at a venue to be announced. This event will be part of the 2021 St. Lucia Nobel Laureate Festival. Persons wishing to attend the ceremony can book their free tickets at https://5fc068d63977b.site123.me or via the Facebook event page https://www.facebook.com/events/382931026367635.
