Ministry of Education reimagines the future of TVET
By Ministry of Education
The Ministry of Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology, and Vocational Training is transforming four secondary schools in Saint Lucia into dynamic Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centers commencing in September 2023.
The four schools are Anse Ger Secondary School, Grande Riviere Secondary School, Piaye Secondary School, and Stanley Jon Odlum Memorial Secondary School.
With the transformation of these schools, the Ministry of Education is seeking to achieve several goals including providing a dynamic student-centered curriculum for diverse and inclusive education, establishing a work-based approach, aligning education with industry needs at local and international levels, enhancing human resource capacity and resilience through skill-based learning, and offering varied qualifications with multiple entry points to access these qualifications. One of the fundamental aims of these centers is to strengthen industry collaborations and connect educational and training needs with the community and formal education system.
With upgraded workshops, an industry-led curriculum, highly skilled teaching staff and a focus on career-centered learning, students will be empowered and equipped for today's job market and beyond, with new capabilities to pursue entrepreneurial initiatives and further studies in specific occupational areas.
"We firmly believe in the benefits of TVET-based education for all students. Our long-term goal is to provide access to limited occupational training areas at all schools. In the short term, we will focus on transforming the operational and instructional programs of the four schools into technical high schools. The Ministry of Education selected these four schools as they have had a significant TVET offering to date and will be best suited to transform into full TVET-focused institutions seamlessly and cost effectively over the next two years, said Delthia Naitram, Head of the TVET Unit, emphasizing the importance of the initiative.
The initiative is being seen by education officials as a major step in the journey to transform Saint adaptable, skilled professionals poised to make meaningful contributions to Saint Lucia's growth.
Stay tuned for more updates as we reimagine the future with TVET.
