The Ministry of Infrastructure, Ports, Energy and Labour has officially granted approval the Overseas Engineering & Construction Company (OECC) of Taiwan to commence construction on the Union Roundabout Project which is estimated at $1.7 million Eastern Caribbean Dollars and not $5 million Eastern Caribbean Dollars as is being reported in sections of the local media.

The Union Roundabout Construction forms part of the larger Marisule – Grande Riviere – Union Road Rehabilitation Project under the Road Improvement and Maintenance Programme Phase IV – RIMP IV.

The project comprises three (3) components being undertaken the OECC as the main contractor and three (3) sub-contractors.

  1. C.O. Williams Construction (St. Lucia) Ltd is engaged in the Marisule to Grande Riviere / Degazon section;
  2. Construction and Industrial Equipment Ltd (CIE Ltd) is engaged on the upper Postlewaite Road to Degazon section and
  3. Skelly’s Construction Services Ltd is responsible for the Union Roundabout.

The Ministry further wishes to reassure all Saint Lucians that construction of the Union Roundabout is guided by thorough engineering analysis by the experts and consultation with key stakeholders.

Additionally, the project is designed to address congestion and traffic flow challenges stemming from the activity at the Dame Pearlette Louisy Primary School and nearby commercial establishments.

A new “Drop-off Zone” will be constructed to accommodate the drop-off and pickup of students, staff and support services for the Dame Pearlette Louisy Primary School.

This will be further complimented by construction of “Slip-Lanes” to accommodate the free flow of traffic not associated to the school and nearby businesses.

All of these plans were developed in consultation with the School and other stakeholders, over a series of planning meetings.

The Postlewaite Road at its intersection with the Allan Bousquet Highway has presented safety challenges for both drivers and pedestrians.

As such the ongoing project, as envisaged, incorporates several road safety features, including designated pedestrian crossings, sidewalks with railings, improved signage, minibus laybys and features to minimize conflicts.

Citizens are encouraged to follow the official project bulletins and information as their source for factual updates as works progress.

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Ports, Energy and Labour encourages all to contact its Communications Unit for project information, in order to avoid misinformation which creates a grave public injustice / disservice.
