In celebration of National Library Week, which commenced on April 8, recent discussions were held challenging the traditional books and shelves view of libraries.
Director of Libraries, Sally Rosemont, said libraries have undergone a significant revolution in services. She also emphasized the role of libraries in bridging the digital divide by providing access to computers and internet services.
Librarian at the UWI Global Campus in Saint Lucia, Ms. Daisy St. Rose, highlighted the transformation of libraries beyond mere book repositories. She underscored the shift towards digital scholarly databases, enabling students to access information anywhere, and at anytime.
The library sector has provided a comprehensive overview detailing the evolution and relevance of libraries in the digital age. From academic institutions to public centers, libraries have transcended traditional roles, embracing technology, community engagement, and digital preservation.
During National Library Week, libraries across the island will join to recognize the hard work of their staff. Additional events include “A Day with Volunteers” where children will be read to by volunteers from the Saint Lucia Retirees Association and the Interact Club in communities around island, a thanksgiving service at the La Croix Maingot Seventh Day Adventist Church, and an “Author Talks” lecture at the Hunter J Francois Library at the SALCC, on Friday, April 12.
