Canadians craving travel to warm weather destinations are still in a holding pattern despite several airlines announcing the resumption of flights to the Caribbean come early summer.
The news comes as all three of Canada’s major airlines last week Thursday announced that they would continue to suspend flights to warm weather destinations.
Canadian airlines suspended all flights to sun destinations in January 2021 at the request of the federal government.
While the travel ban was to expire on April 30, Air Canada, WestJet and Air Transat all note that they would not be resuming regular service to the region.
Instead, flights to the region would be to facilitate the movement of cargo and essential workers.
Air Canada shared that it would operate one flight per week from Toronto to Kingston, Jamaica and Bridgetown, Barbados beginning May 5 and May 9, respectively, however the flights will not transport Canadians to the destinations.
“Air Canada will extend its suspension of Sun flying throughout May. We will continue to operate some flights to Mexico City, Barbados, and Kingston, but these would not carry passengers south. Instead, they will provide essential services, for example carrying cargo and in some cases on northbound flights, temporary foreign workers and Canadians currently abroad. We will continue to monitor the situation and adjust our network as appropriate, as well as work with the government to develop a safe reopening plan and restore travel,” said Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick
Other Canadian airlines have indicated that they intend to restart operations mid-June, with WestJet announced earlier this week that it is aiming for June 4.
