He was so many things all at once; political activist, publisher, journalist master orator, and a source of inspiration to the Rastafarian movement. Today, August 17th we mark the 134th anniversary of the birth of the distinguished Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
Though he passed away nearly a century ago, his ideals live on, none more so than his dream of a united Africa. “Africa for Africans . . . at home and abroad” he insisted. But he cautioned that simply doing nothing and hoping for a result was a futile exercise. “Chance”, he said, “has never yet satisfied the hopes of a suffering people.”
Much persecuted for his beliefs, he never gave up, he never wavered. He reminded us to always believe in ourselves and to never let others define us. As he puts it, “if you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life.”
And we celebrate his birthday, as we remember his struggles towards the upliftment of Africans and as we seek to forge a path forward, we can do no better than recall his admonition to first acquaint ourselves with the knowledge of our history. “A people without the knowledge of their history, origin, and culture are like a tree without roots”.
Long may his ideals live on and may his dreams soon become reality.
