The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has responded to allegations that Officers attached to the Vieux Fort Police Station refused to enter a crime scene, where there was an infection of COVID-19.
On Thursday, September 2, at about 7:30 am, officers received a report of a death of a female at her residence in Cedar Heights, Vieux Fort.
The initial report indicated that she was a COVID-19 positive patient, who was allowed to isolate at home.
Further enquiries revealed that there were other individuals in the home who were possibly COVID-19 positive.
One of the occupants of the house, 26-year-old Chiquana Ambrose apparently died as a result of the virus.
According to the police, all reported deaths are investigated thoroughly, to rule out any foul play, unlawful death or murder.
In doing so, officers would have direct contact with materials on and around the scene.
“Out of an abundance of caution, officers delayed their investigations of the scene; the home of the deceased, until all safety precautions were in place,” the RSLPF told Loop News Friday.
According to the RSLPF, protocol dictates that any scene which possesses a health hazard requires communication with the relevant experts before processing by police, to safeguard all officers as well as the general public.
“In this instance, officials from the Ministry of Health, office of the Commissioner of Police and Saint Lucia Fire Service, were contacted to chart the way forward. In keeping with the established protocols, responding officers were equipped with the necessary protective equipment and were informed of safe disposal practices for after use,” said the RSLPF.
The scene was subsequently processed without posing harm to any individuals present or those who would have future contact with the responding officers.
