Saint Lucia Government Plans Legislation to Tackle Noise Pollution
By Josiah G.A Bicette/SNN
The government of Saint Lucia is set to introduce new legislation aimed at addressing noise pollution in public places, responding to concerns raised by residents of Rodney Bay about noise levels from entertainment venues in the area and its surroundings.
Gros Islet MP Kenson Casimir disclosed that the Attorney General’s Chambers would be tasked with creating legislation to comprehensively address noise pollution throughout Saint Lucia. In an interview broadcast by the Government Information Service (GIS), Casimir emphasized the need for objective measures, such as an objectively measurable decibel level, to effectively tackle the issue.
The government has actively engaged with Rodney Bay residents, the police, and business owners in response to the noise pollution concerns in the area. Casimir highlighted ongoing discussions about the possibility of enclosing businesses to mitigate the problem, emphasizing that a one-size-fits-all approach may not be fair or effective.
Casimir suggested that the discussion should involve considerations such as the nature of the business, the sensitivity of business owners to residents, and potential measures to encourage businesses to enclose their premises. The government is exploring options such as providing concessions, tax relief, or other incentives to encourage businesses to take steps to minimize noise impact.
The Gros Islet MP emphasized the importance of a national discussion on the matter once the Attorney General’s Chambers provides guidance on the acceptable noise levels at business establishments. The proposed legislation aims to strike a balance between addressing noise pollution concerns and supporting businesses in their operations.
