BY Saint Lucia Olympic Committee

The Women and Girls in Sport Leadership Workshop, part of the ongoing Get Girls Playing Project, was successfully held on September 28th and 29th 2024, attracting national sports federation representatives, sport enthusiasts, athletes, coaches and administrators from across the country. Hosted by the Saint Lucia Olympic Committee Women in Sport Commission in collaboration with Supporting Girls in Sports and facilitated by Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committee (CANOC) Executive Committee member Ms. Ytannia Wiggins, the workshop provided an engaging platform to discuss strategies for increasing female participation and advancing women leadership in sports.

The two-day event offered interactive sessions on leadership development, gender equity, and career pathways for women beyond the playing field. Participants explored actionable solutions to overcome barriers that prevent women and girls from fully engaging in sports, both as athletes and in leadership roles.

“The response from the participants has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Sherneil Charlery Project Lead for the Get Girls Playing Project and President of Supporting Girls in Sports. “The workshop has truly inspired a renewed commitment in the attendees to create inclusive sports environments that empower women and girls.”

“We are excited for the next steps of this project and look forward to working with the participants to fortify our goals and to see growth in female participation in sports across the board. We will start with who we have whether it be one new player, one new leader, one new administrator, one new official. This is a start to the greater & bigger picture. The energy and enthusiasm coming out of this past weekend is what we have hoped for and look forward to building and sustaining it. This is long overdue.” said Velica Augustin Chairperson of the Women in Sport Commission.

Attendees praised the workshop for its insightful content and practical recommendations. Many expressed a strong commitment to implementing the strategies discussed and fostering gender equity within their respective organizations. As part of the Get Girls Playing Project, this workshop reinforces the initiative’s mission to promote lifelong involvement in sports for women and girls, ensuring they have pathways to leadership and opportunities for growth at all levels.

Project Information: The Get Girls Playing Program is geared at increasing female participation in sports. The main aim of the project is to get more women and girls to play, become officials, coaches, and administrators.

Project Objectives:

  • To increase the number of women and girls who play sports. Sports play a vital role in everyday life. It has many health benefits and provides participants with transferable skills that they can use in other areas of life.
  • To increase the number of women who serve as technical officials in sports. There is a need for more women as coaches, referees, scorers and other officiating roles in all sports.
  • To increase the number of women in leadership positions in sports. Although there is an increase in the number of women in administration, they do not hold the highest position. Women are still subjected to traditional roles of secretary. The aim of the campaign is to help eliminate that stereotype while preparing women to be able to hold positions of power within their sports.
