Saint Lucia recognizes Diabetes Awareness Month
By GIS
World Diabetes Day was observed on November 14. The 2023 theme is "Access to Diabetes Care," alongside the slogan "Know Your Risk, Know Your Response."
According to recent statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), 422 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes mellitus, a chronic disease characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. Severe symptoms include the deterioration of vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels. This in turn has a significant impact on quality of life and could result in death.
Senior Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs Dr. Shana Cyr-Philbert details a free programme offered by the ministry to help citizens effectively manage diabetes.
“If you are diabetic and not aware, knowing your status and risk can allow for early treatment to prevent complications. Currently, many of our healthcare professionals and community members are trained in teaching diabetics and those at risk for Diabetes to manage and lower their risk of disease and complications at home. We offer a six-week programme, the Self-Management Programme, that equips diabetics or at-risk individuals and their family members with the knowledge they need to maintain healthy lifestyle practices. Call your nearest wellness centre to register. The course is free and is offered virtually and face-to-face.”
November’s Diabetes Awareness Month features a range of events. World Diabetes Day was observed on November 14 with a ceremony that gathered key figures in diabetes care to discuss the ministry's initiatives. Screenings will be were available at Massy Store locations and the Sir Stanislaus James Building in Castries.
A major highlight during the month will be the "All Things Diabetes" health fair at Constitution Park, scheduled to take place on Nov. 28. The fair will feature booths that educate and inform on diabetes, and the support offered by external partner agencies of the Saint Lucia Diabetes and Hypertension Association.
