Saint Lucian-Born Attorney and Children’s Author to Hold New York City Book Launch

By Consulate General of Saint Lucia

Jan Meyer

PRESS RELEASE – In observance of Women’s History Month, the Consulate General of Saint Lucia in New York is partnering with Saint Lucian attorney and debut author Jan Meyer in hosting the New York City launch for her children’s book Luna Eclipse

This event will take place on Thursday, March 10, 2022, 6:30 PM, at the Instaglam Event Space, 4303 Church Avenue, Brooklyn, New York (between Troy Avenue and 43rd Street).

Luna Eclipse examines the theme of mixed-race children growing up in mostly white neighborhoods. Specifically, the book addresses these children’s tendency to identify with the majority, while ignoring or downplaying their non-white origins. Meyer is herself the proud mother of two biracial children.

"A mixed bear living among the polar bears, Luna has always believed herself to be a tanned polar bear. When a similarly colored bear moves to town, Luna is forced to confront the misconceptions about her identity," Meyer states. “Luna Eclipse provides child-friendly approaches to this difficult conversation, with the goal being self-acceptance and understanding.”

Meyer says that her love of books stems from hours spent reading under the mango tree behind her childhood home in the village of Micoud, Saint Lucia, where she, along with her three siblings, were raised by their mother, Cecile Herman.

This experience, and her inherent eagerness to learn, led Meyer to emigrate to the United States in 1998, where she studied Literature, Afro-American Studies, and Music at Ramapo College in New Jersey. In 2007, Meyer enrolled at Hofstra University School of Law in Hempstead, New York, graduating in 2010 with a focus on tax law. Now based in South Orange County, California, Meyer also works as an estate planning and administration attorney, and is the owner of Rum Shop Publishing Company.

The Consulate General encourages Saint Lucians and friends of Saint Lucia in the New York City area to attend this event, and show support for Saint Lucia’s artistic community. For more information, please contact the Consulate via e-mail at [email protected],or 212.697.9360.
