The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College is now home to the personal literature collection of Sir Derek Walcott. The official unveiling of the Derek Walcott Library took place on Friday, January 22, as part of the Nobel Laureate Festival.
The collection of Sir Derek’s books were handed over to the college by his partner Sigrid Nama in January 2020, in keeping with Sir Derek’s wishes that the Hunter J. Francois Library be tasked with managing the literary gift.
The library will preserve and promote the history and cultural heritage of this great Caribbean figure, while securing and managing access to this special collection which provides a unique insight into Walcott’s life.
The Derek Walcott Library will be open to faculty and students of the College, as well as to scholars and researchers and the general public. The Hunter J. Francois Library is working on processing and digitizing aspects of the collection to provide remote access through its Nobel Laureate Digital Database – a sub database of the library’s Greenstone Digital Library.
A ribbon cutting ceremony formally unveiled the Derek Walcott Library, on the campus of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College.
