SEVENTEEN CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS GRADUATE AS PAROLE LIAISON OFFICERS

A cohort of 17 correction officers are now better equipped to usher inmates of the Bordelais
Correctional Facility through the process of rehabilitation after completing a two-week training
session.
The developmental program was undertaken with the goal of confirming participating
correctional officers as parole liaison officers. Commencing on May 26th, the ‘Introduction to
Correctional Planning Training’ initiative was facilitated by Assistant Director of Probation and
Parole Services Mr. Cuthbert Henry, with the support of existing parole officers.
A series of comprehensive sessions examined areas critical to the correctional system, including
‘Criminological Theory’ and ‘Analysis and Risk Assessment’. At a closing ceremony marking
the end of the initial bout of training on June 16th, officers were presented with certificates
recognizing their completion of the initial exercise.
Extending the official welcome, Parole Officer Shana Innocent commented on the significance
of the days achievement, stating; “This collaboration which will continue after today’s
ceremony, aims to improve the Parole process in our country, as we all work together to
rehabilitate and reintegrate offenders as law-abiding citizens and to protect the safety of the
citizens of Saint Lucia. “
Describing the participation received as a career highlight, the Assistant Director of Probation
and Parole Services emphasized the value of the role played by such officers. According to Mr.
Henry, such training opportunities should be used as a catalyst for improved practices at the
Bordelais Correctional Facility.

Speaking ahead of the presentation of certificates, Deputy Director of Corrections Mr. Leonard
Terrence reflected on the intended impact of the training executed, encouraging officers to
ensure the information gleaned shapes their professional practice.

Minister with responsibility for Home Affairs Hon. Dr. Virginia Albert Poyotte underscored the
significant value of efficiency within the probation and parole system, given tits role in the
rehabilitation of inmates at the Bordelais Correctional facility. According to Dr. Poyotte,
providing support to the institution continues to remain a top priority for the Government of
Saint Lucia.

The mid-morning ceremony was also attended by Deputy Permanent Secretary for the
Department of Home Affairs Mr. Ricky Quinland; Director of Corrections Mr. Verne Garde;
Assistant Director, Probation and Parole Services Mrs. Kerian Calixte; and Former Director for
Probation and Parole Services Mrs. Yolanda Jules – Louis.
Reflecting on her experience and that of her fellow trainees, officer Carleen John expressed their
keen interest in applying the knowledge gleaned from the two-week session.
Charged with the responsibility of supporting existing services, the newest parole liaison officers
will operate within Saint Lucia’s probation and parole system, thus expanding the existing team
of 4 probation officers and 10 parole officers.
