SLDHA sensitizes public on non-communicable diseases
By SLDHA
The Saint Lucia Diabetes and Hypertension Association is sensitizing the public on the effects of non-communicable diseases.
President of the Saint Lucia Diabetes and Hypertension Association, Dr. Kedhma Dorh, drew attention to hypertension being ‘The Silent Killer’. Because people generally feel well, blood pressure is not always monitored which allows for the condition to be present but undetected, sometimes with fatal consequences.
Dr. Dorh cited the WHO/PAHO 2015 report that listed Saint Lucia’s hypertension rate at 27.1 percent of the population.
He explained: “Hypertension is called a silent killer in that with hypertension you have no symptoms so in a room of 20 persons you might have five of them hypertensive and they might not even know because we don't check our blood pressure often. One’s blood pressure should not be higher than 139 over 89.”
Early detection of the condition is key. The aim of the SLDHA is prevention, education management and the eradication of hypertension and diabetes in Saint Lucia. Dr. Dorh urges all citizens to eat well and to exercise.
