Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School Resilience Programme
By Ministry Of Health
Form Two students of the Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School were engaged in a programme implemented by the Substance Abuse Advisory Council Secretariat (SAACS) in collaboration with the school’s counselor, Mr. Kendal Alexander. This programme focused on providing the students with information and life-skills to cope with risks for the use and misuse of alcohol, tobacco and other related substances. This included providing the students with information about the various categories of drugs and their impact on the body when used.
The programme also incorporated scenarios to aid the students navigate difficult and adverse situations to help in taking better personally protective action and healthier choices. By creating an atmosphere of safety and trust the students also had many opportunities to share their actual life experiences and challenges to identify better problem solving strategies and improve the skills of problem solving, assertiveness and effective communication.
This programme was undertaken during 2023 to 2024. At the completion of the sessions, the students undertook a project which was intended to benefit the wider school body and enhance the school environment. This project focused on promoting values and behaviours for success. With the support of the Peer Helpers, Visual Arts students and art teacher, Ms. Yukari Charles, a mural was painted within one of the school’s areas of high student movement. SAACS extends thanks to the Pan-American Health Organization for the funding of the paint and other supplies for the painting of this mural.
