SSDF, BNTF enhance water supply with new Victoria water storage facility
By Ministry of Equity
The Saint Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF), a satellite agency of the Ministry of Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment has joined forces with the Government of Saint Lucia and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to celebrate the commissioning of the Victoria Water Storage Facility. The ceremony, held on August 9, marked a significant milestone in improving water access for the residents of Choiseul and surrounding communities.
The Victoria Water Storage Facility, a pivotal project in the Basic Needs Trust Fund’s (BNTF) 10th cycle, is the result of a rewarding partnership that began in 1979 between the Saint Lucia government and CDB. To date, over 150 million USD has been invested in key sectors including Access and Drainage, Water and Sanitation, Education and Human Resource Development, and Livelihoods across the island.
John Victorin, Executive Director of the SSDF, expressed his appreciation for the collaboration. “Today’s ceremony is a testament to the successful partnership between the government of Saint Lucia and the Caribbean Development Bank,” Victorin said. “We are delighted to have partnered with the Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) on this crucial water and sanitation project. Our joint efforts have culminated in the installation of a new 100,000-gallon tank and the renovation of an existing 50,000-gallon tank, ensuring a more reliable water supply for 13 communities in the Choiseul area.”
The new infrastructure is expected to enhance water access for multiple communities, including Morne Jacques, Belle Vue, Dacretin, Fond Cacoa Ravineau, Mongouge, Victoria, Wavin Navay, Pierre Morne, Franciou, Bois Den, and Morne Sion. WASCO's Chief Executive Officer, Zilta George-Leslie, highlighted the project’s importance, stating, “This facility addresses the urgent need for a sustainable solution to improve the water supply system in this community and its environs. It will alleviate water supply issues, particularly during emergencies, and support the growing demands due to climate change and development pressures.”
The project encompasses the installation of a 100,000-gallon glass-fused-to-steel storage tank, road upgrades, and the construction of a reinforced concrete base enclosed by a double access gate. Parliamentary Representative for Choiseul/Saltibus, Hon. Bradley Felix, praised the initiative, noting, “Many communities in Choiseul have long struggled with irregular water supply. Thanks to this new tank and WASCO’s redistribution efforts, we anticipate a substantial improvement in water availability, which is crucial for community health and well-being, particularly for young children.”
The successful completion of the Victoria Water Storage Facility highlights the commitment of the Government of Saint Lucia, SSDF, and BNTF, supported by funding from the Caribbean Development Bank, to improving the quality of life for Saint Lucian citizens.
