St. Lucia Football Association saddened at the announcement of the death of Oswald Wilkinson Larcher

Press Release –  The St. Lucia Football Association Inc. is saddened at the announcement of the death of its former president Oswald Wilkinson Larcher better known as Wilkie who passed on Tuesday 10th November 2020.

Wilkie Larcher served the SLFA as its President from 2004 to 2007 and is credited with the revival of women’s football on the island.

Apart from organizing several women’s competition he was instrumental in St. Lucia hosting a Concacaf Women’s Under 17 group stage tournament. 

As President of the Association, Larcher was also able to attract sponsorship from non-traditional sponsors such as the Royal Bank of Canada, KFC, M&C and Winfresh. He worked feverishly in trying to get the FIFA GOAL Project, now the SLFA Technical Centre off the ground and in 2006.  

Wilkie Larcher’s involvement in football got its roots first at the St. Lucia A Level College where he as teacher introduced the sport of football to the school since students were clamouring for it. 

He would later join with others to form the Lancers Sports Club and later became its President. 

Under his leadership Lancers Sports Club grew to be a force to be reckoned with on the local scene.

In the early 1980´s, Wilkie also offered his leadership skills to the Castries Football Council in the role of President because the high level of confidence in him by the clubs in Castries.

Wilkie was able to bring a greater level of organization and sponsorship to the Castries Football Council.

The passing of Oswald Wilkinson Larcher has meant that the St. Lucia Football Association Inc. and the football fraternity has lost a servant of the sport.  

The football lives he touched during his lifetime of service are numerous.  His caring and fatherly attitude, especially towards youth players, will remain as one of his lasting legacies.

The St. Lucia Football Association, on behalf of the football fraternity extends its sincere condolences to the family of Wilkie Larcher and at the appropriate time the Association vows to fittingly pay tribute to the life and contribution of this fallen football hero.
