St Lucia Met Services urging the citizens to take necessary precautions in preparation for the 2024 hurricane season

By Department Of Infrastructure

The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services Division of the Department of Infrastructure, Ports, and Transport is urging the citizens of Saint Lucia to take necessary precautions in preparation for the 2024 hurricane season. Given the forecast of an above-normal hurricane activity, it’s important to be well-prepared. Here are some key recommendations:

1)Stock up on Food and Water: Ensure you have a sufficient supply of non-perishable food items and clean drinking water to last at least a week.

2)Medical Supplies: Keep a well-stocked first-aid kit, prescription medications, and any other essential medical supplies readily available.

3)Trim Overhanging Branches and Trees: Check the surroundings of your home and trim any branches or trees that could pose a risk during strong winds.

4)Clear Drains: Prevent flooding by clearing drains and gutters of debris to ensure proper water flow.

These steps are part of a broader effort to enhance resilience against the expected increase in severe weather events. NOAA has predicted a range of 17 to 25 total named storms for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, with 8 to 13 forecast to become hurricanes, including 4 to 7 major hurricanes. The collaboration between FEMA, NOAA, and the National Weather Service emphasizes the importance of individual and community preparedness. Regionally and locally, CDEMA and NEMO have advocated the same.
