St. Lucia nets first win in OECS Senior Women Netball Tournament

Team St. Lucia returned to their winning ways with an emphatic and resounding victory against Antigua and Barbuda in the ECCB sponsored OECS Senior Women Netball Tournament at the Arnos Vale Sports Facility in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

They soundly thrashed Antigua and Barbuda 63 – 28 on the morning of Tuesday 17th June 2019.

They led at every quarter 15 – 11, 31 – 18 and 44 – 24.

The team put on a dominant display in the final quarter, outscoring their opponents 19 – 4 to seal victory.

Dasha Eugene 31 from 44 attempts and Shem Maxwell 32 from 44 attempts were St. Lucia main contributors.

Leading the way for Antigua and Barbuda R. Regis 15 from 21 attempts, A. Lake 10 from 15 attempts and T. Ladoo 3 from 5 attempts.

St. Lucia had 88 attempts at goal and scored 63 for 72%, while Antigua and Barbuda had 41 attempts netted 28 for 68%.

After a  commanding victory against Antigua and Barbuda in the morning St. Lucia had to dig deep to defeat a spirited Dominica team 46 – 34 to make it two wins for the day.

Indeed, from the quarter scores the game was played in phases.

St. Lucia jumped to a comfortable 17 – 6 lead at the end of the first quarter, however, the Dominicans stormed back with 20 – 10 run to end the half trailing marginally 26 – 27.

In the third quarter the St. Lucia team recaptured their momentum with a 9 – 2 blitz to end the third quarter with a 36 – 28 cushion.

They continued that momentum into the final quarter out scoring their opponents 10 – 6 to seal victory.

St. Lucia was led by Dasha Eugene 24 from 35 attempts and Shem Maxwell 22 from 31 attempts.

For Dominica A. Xavier scored 20 from 27 attempts and L. James 14 from 20 attempts.

St. Lucia next plays Grenada later today in the second round of the competition.

In the second game of the evening Antigua and Barbuda surprisingly held a 12 – 7 lead over St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the end of the first quarter.

Rallied by home support St. Vincent and the Grenadines shifted gears in the second quarter with a 13 – 7 spurt as they ended the half marginally ahead 20 – 19.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines continued coming alive in the third quarter to close it 37 – 30. They continued that momentum in the final quarter to close out the game 47 – 42.

Antigua and Barbuda main contributors were Rayana Regis who netted 34 form 38 attempts and Amey Lake 8 from 18 attempts.

The two teams will now meet in the second round of the tournament on Thursday 20th June at 7.30 am.

At the conclusion of the first round of the double round robin competition, St. Vincent and the Grenadines have won all their games thus far, Grenada has won three and lost one to date while St. Lucia has won two and lost two.
