by Virtual Island Summit
St Lucia will be represented by several speakers during this year’s Virtual Island Summit (VIS), such as CARILEC Executive Director Cletus Bertin, Jade Mountain Resort Property Manager Carl Hunter, and Kurt Inglis, Energy Officer at Global Green Growth Institute. Also attending will be a number of St Lucia’s Island Innovation Ambassadors. The sessions in which St Lucian speakers are featured can be found below, and the Summit’s full agenda can be found at: https://islandinnovation.co/events/virtual-island-summit/
The Virtual Island Summit is a virtual event where an estimated 10,000 participants from over 500 islands around the world will meet to share ideas and solutions for resilient and sustainable living. The summit aims to promote cross-sector collaboration by emphasizing the need for input and partnerships from across the private, public, academic, and NGO sectors. It will be completely free and the public is invited to attend.
“There are so many similarities among islands across the world,” Audrey Joachim, Director of Operations & Growth, said joining virtually from Guadeloupe in the French Caribbean, “Some islands may have solutions others may need and don’t know. We created the Virtual Island Summit to showcase what is happening on different islands. The idea is to create a place for leaders who believe in the prosperity of islands through sustainable choices.”
“Our St. Lucian people need to attend this event”, Michelle N. Samuel, Sales Assistant from St. Lucia lamented. “Our Tourism sector alone generated over US$900M, and considering some of the principles of Sustainable Tourism such as sustainable use of resources, reducing over-consumption and waste, and involving local communities, I’m anticipating the conversation on Radical Regeneration: A New Look at Sustainable Tourism featuring speaker, Mr. Hunter.”
“Notwithstanding that here in St. Lucia we are currently grappling with incorporating renewables into the energy sector, so the discussion on Transitioning to Renewable Energy on which Mr. Bertin and Mr. Inglis are panel members and are equally vital to us.” “I am encouraging as many of us as possible to attend the Virtual Island Summit.”
During this year’s Virtual Island Summit, participants will have free access to world-class experts who will present ideas, new technologies, case studies, and opportunities for collaboration. Confirmed speakers include Hon. Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi, Prime Minister of Niue, Ambassador Solo Mara, Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Development Forum, and Karin Shephardson, Lead Environmental Specialist at the World Bank.
