St Vincent - La Soufriere volcano is being monitored for any signs of reactivation

St Vincent’s La Soufriere volcano, which went explosive on April 09, 2021, is showing signs of settling down.

However, despite the current pattern, the volcano is being monitored for signs of reactivation.

Lead scientist Professor Richard Robertson says activities are generally dominated by lahars which they suspect will continue for some time due to the weather patterns. Robertson noted that the gas readings continue to decrease at La Soufriere.

“The activity all fits within the working model that we had, this great amount of magma came up when the system erupted, and it’s basically that fixed set amount is getting rid of all the steam.”

Robertson said what the team is mainly looking for now is some reactivation, given La Soufriere’s pattern.

“Given Soufriere’s pattern, it stops. That’s possibly not going to happen right now, it’s going to go back into a tranquil period for a little while before you probably have another batch come through again, and you get another eruption.”

Robertson says the hazards continue to be lahars, and the public should continue to remain wary and stay out of valleys.

Work was completed to finalize the installation of the summit seismic station on September 01 through the assistance of the British helicopter RFA Wave Knight.
