Statement by the DIPT on the Ongoing West Coast Road Project

The Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Transport has noted the concerns of the motoring public regarding the conditions associated with ongoing works on the West Coast Road.
The Department acknowledges that improvements are required in site management, especially regarding installation of signage and additional safety equipment. Over the past few weeks, works have been delayed and road conditions have deteriorated as a result of persistent rainfall. Even during dry spells, materials to be used on the road surface must be allowed to dry so as not to further compromise the quality of construction.

The Department has maintained dialogue with its key stakeholders and has instituted a number of measures to ensure heightened communication with these stakeholders along the affected areas, including WhatsApp groups to be managed by the Contractor. This is expected to provide the public with regular and timely updates on work in progress along the West Coast Road.

The Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Transport wishes to apologize to the general public for the inconveniences caused. We remain committed to our mandate of supporting our local economy through the provision of safe and resilient road infrastructure and wish to assure the public that all concerns and interests will continue to receive paramount attention. To address the issues raised, we are implementing improved traffic management strategies to reduce travel time and ensure smoother traffic flow. Measures are being put in place to minimize dust and improve air quality for residents and commuters. Additional road signage will be installed to guide motorists safely through construction zones. Furthermore, we will provide frequent updates through various communication channels to keep the public informed about the progress and any changes in traffic arrangements.
