Suspected drowning near Pigeon Island, Gros Islet of female who departed Martinique to St Lucia

On Monday May 15, 2023 about 11:15 a.m. a report of a suspected drowning was conveyed to the Police Marine Unit.
About 12:35 p.m. Officers of the Gros Islet Police Station were informed of the discovery. The deceased who was later identified as forty-two (42) year old female Andrea Jules of Odsan, Castries, was part of a group of nine (9) persons on board a local vessel travelling from Martinque to Saint Lucia, which encountered engine trouble and rough seas, over turned as a result. Eight (8) of the nine persons were eventually rescued by the French Marine Unit and a French catamaran. Andrea Jules was suspected to have drowned.
The body of Andrea Jules was later recovered about six (6) nautical miles off Pigeon Island by a local vessel. The Police Marine Unit retrieved the body and she was positively identified by her son. She was later pronounced dead on the scene by a medical practitioner.
Investigations are continuing into this matter.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled for a later date.
