The Saint Lucia National Commission for UNESCO, and by extension the Ministry of Education, is deeply saddened by news of the passing of Sir Leton Thomas, a lifelong friend, supporter and advocate of UNESCO and the National Commission.
Sir Leton Thomas served as Saint Lucia’s Representative to the UNESCO Executive Board from 1997 to 2001 and was elected to the Vice Presidency of the Board for the Latin America and the Caribbean region at the 158th session in 1999.
He will be remembered for his dedicated and selfless service to his country and the region and for his remarkable contribution to advancing the work of UNESCO. His knowledge, expertise and tremendous insight into the work of the organisation contributed greatly in advancing the development agenda of Saint Lucia and the region, especially in the fields of education and youth development. He was an outstanding statesman who was the epitome of integrity in public service. We honour his memory and will forever cherish his invaluable contribution to our organization.
On behalf of the Chairperson, Honourable Shawn Edward, the Secretary General, Ms Marcia Symphorien and the staff of the Saint Lucia National Commission for UNESCO, we extend deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
May he rest in perfect peace.
