In an interview last night after Saint Lucia recorded it’s seventh murder of the year National Security Minister Hermangild Francis said he has little power to address crime. Minister Francis said that, “The Minister can only assist the police to do what he have to do. I get some information sometimes… I pass it along.”
The truth of the matter is, the Minister can do much, much more than simply pass information along to the police. If he wanted, he could 1) increase the police budget and put more police on the streets, 2) provide the police with more crime fighting technology to improve the amount of crimes that are solved, 3) pass tougher laws to hold criminals accountable and protect victims, 4) invest in communities so that the people in the community have resources for neighborhood watches and for personal security technology, 5) get guns off the streets with gun buy back programmes, 6) get police more training and so much more. These are just a few of the things that the Minister can do to make our communities safer.
We have an uncreative, uncaring and unelected Minister of National Security. Under his watch, crime has skyrocketed in Saint Lucia and people feel less safe in their homes. This is a pattern under this uncaring UWP government that puts their friends, family and foreigners first while the rest of us are struggling to put food on the table.
